Akili Jamal Haynes began exploring African drumming and music as a member of the late Nana Kimati Dinizulu’s Kotoko Society in the early 90’s in NYC. Has performed as percussionist, multi-instrumentalist, and research assistant to Kimati Dinizulu (Alvin Ailey Dance Theater) Riverside, directed by Judith Jamison; percussionist (Underground Railway Theater) Roots Of Liberty featuring Danny Glover; music director, percussionist (Boston Arts Academy 10th Anniversary) Dr. Glory Van Scott Urban Caanan; music director, percussionist, composer, multi-instrumentalist (Isabella S. Gardner) Life’s, Lessons……. Learned or (When My Soul Looks Back) a Choreopoem by Adrienne Hawkins; musical director of the music ministry at Unity In The City (Brookline, MA, 3 years), faculty accompanist at Boston Conservatory at Berklee, Jeannette Neil Dance Studios, Prometheus Dance Company, Harvard Dance Center, and Boston University Dance Department; Chair of Percussion and Ensembles at the Community Music Center of Boston, Creator of a current multi-media work in progress recently performed at Wellesley College as The Art & Soul of Chibuzo, with a recent name change to Becoming Chibuzo, in which he is actor, vocalist, percussionist, trumpeter, bassist, pianist, dancer, script writer, composer, cinematographer, video editor, and band leader.
